Gender Equality Observatory registers a marked increase in total femicides after the latest cases reported in the country

He Gender Equality Observatory (OEG) has recorded a total of 32 cases of femicides so far in 2024 in Puerto Rico, reflecting an increase in violent deaths of women when compared to the same period in 2023.

The non-governmental organization has registered 20 femicides under investigation, eight intimate or perpetrated in situations of domestic violence, one family violence, two due to organized crime and one transfeminicide. However, by the end of April 2023, the figure stood at 18 cases, reported the OEG analyst. Debora Upegui Hernandez.

The amount contrasts with the data of the Puerto Rico Police, which has recorded a total of 20 murders of women, of which they classify seven as intimate femicides and one family one, linked to a case of intimate feminicide. After being requested, the Uniformed Forces could not provide the background information for the same period in 2023.
