Puerto Rico starts with a victory in the World Mixed Teams of table tennis

The mixed table tennis team that represents Puerto Rico in the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2023which takes place in Chengdu, China, achieved an important victory in its first match by beating the Hong Kong-China team by a score of 8-7.

This is the first time that this tournament has been held, which has an innovative format where the team that first wins eight games (sets) is declared the winner of the tie. Each match is three games. The competition began on Monday and will run until Sunday, December 10, 2023.

The National Team is made up of the sisters Adriana, Melanie and Fabiola Diaz; Brianna Burgos, Brian Afanador, Daniel Gonzalez, Oscar Birriel and Angel Naranjo. Bladimir Diaz accompanies them as a coach.

Puerto Rico and Hong Kong-China are part of group 1 along with China and Sweden. In total 18 teams participate, divided into four divisions.

The first match saw Hong Kong take a 2-1 lead when the mixed doubles pair of Ho Kwan Kit and Li Ho Ching beat Naranjo and Burgos. Then, in the women’s singles, Adriana gave Puerto Rico a 4-2 lead by beating Doo Hoi Kem 3-0.

Hong Kong took the lead again 5-4 when Wong Chung Ting beat Afanador 3-0. Later, Puerto Rico tied the score 6-6 when the men’s doubles pair of Afanador and Gonzalez defeated the duo of Wong Chung Ting and Lam Siu Han 2-1.

In the decisive women’s doubles match, Adriana and Melanie gave Puerto Rico the victory by beating Doo Hoi Kem and Zhu Chengzhu 2-1 for the final 8-7.

The national team will return to the ring on Tuesday, starting at 1:00 am, Puerto Rico time, to face Sweden.
