The extreme right registers advances in elections for the European Parliament

Brussels – Far-right parties shook the traditional powers of the European Union and made significant gains in Sunday’s European Parliament elections, dealing a particularly humiliating blow to French President Emmanuel Macron.

On a day when the bloc of 27 countries made a palpable shift to the right, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni more than doubled her seats in the European Parliament. And even after a scandal involving its candidates, the far-right Alternative for Germany won enough seats to overtake Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party.

Faced with the threat from the extreme right, the European People’s Party (EPP) of the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen had already positioned itself to the right on issues such as migration and climate change before the elections, and was rewarded by remain the largest group, by a wide margin, in the European Parliament and de-facto intermediaries of the legislature’s growing powers.
