The LAI men’s basketball final is paralyzed due to alleged irregularities in the signing of two athletes

The Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI) decided this Wednesday to paralyze the third and decisive game of the men’s basketball final of the Sports Festival between the team from the Mayaguez University Campus (RUM) of the University of Puerto Rico and the Ana G. Mendez University (UAGM) while eligibility is investigated of two student athletes from the UAGM.

The game was scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm at the Recreation and Sports Palace in Mayaguez.

The determination was made after the Mayaguez Campus (RUM) of the University of Puerto Rico requested that the Jeremy Miranda, Algenis Quintana and Alejandro Carmona because they are supposedly professional athletes and exceed the salary limit established by the General Regulations of the LAI. In the letter from the educational center – dated April 22, 2024 – no evidence was included.

After an initial investigation by the LAI, Carmona was exonerated by virtue of the BSN certification and the case was ordered to be filed and closed, and his eligibility was upheld in a resolution and order dated April 23.
