San Juan set a new record for warmest minimum temperature and tied the record for maximum temperature on Saturday.
The National Meteorological Service (SNM) reported that The warmest minimum temperature recorded at the San Juan International Airport station on Saturday was 80 degrees Fahrenheit (F), breaking the mark of 79 degrees set in 1955.
On the other hand, the SNM also pointed out that The maximum temperature record tied with the record recorded in 1951, when the temperature was about 90 degrees on that same date.
On Saturday morning, that same federal office issued a heat warning for several municipalities due to the high heat indices, which would fluctuate between 108 to 111 degrees, mostly in towns in the north and west.
The heat has been one of the biggest climate mishaps worldwide for the year 2023causing or exacerbating various situations such as uncontrollable forest fires in different countries such as the United States, Spain, Greece, among others.
In fact, last July was the hottest month in history. with a global average temperature of 62.51 degrees.
“These records have grim consequences for both people and the planet exposed to increasingly frequent and intense extreme events,” said Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a division of the European Union’s space program.
