A “relief” for mayors to access emergency funds due to rain, although they warn that they are insufficient

Direct access to $250,000 from the government Emergency Reserve for each of the municipalities included by the governor Pedro Pierluisi in a declaration of a state of emergency, as a result of the rains that the country received two weeks ago, represents immediate “relief” for the city councils, stressed the president of the Federation of Mayors, Gabriel Hernandez Rodriguez.

“These $250,000 come to mitigate the issue of municipalities having some ‘cash flow’ so that they can manage extraordinary expenses as a result of the rains,” said Hernandez Rodriguez.

However, the mayor of Camuy also acknowledged, in turn, that this is an insufficient amount compared to the loss estimates handled by the city councils, which are in the process of completing the corresponding claims through the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (NMEAD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA, in English).

“It is not enough, we have municipalities like Yauco, where losses are around $9 million, and Orocovis, with $7 million”mentioned the president of the Federation, when highlighting these two examples within the list of 31 municipalities included in the declaration of state of emergency.
