A US congressman who died last month wins his party’s primary

Washington— US Congressman Donald Payne Jr., who died last month of a heart attack, won the Democratic Party primaries on Tuesday night in his district because his name was still on the ballots.

Payne, representative of one of the districts of New Jerseyhad run for re-election without opposition within his party, but at the time of his death the term for other candidates to run had already expired.

The legislator, 65 years old, suffered a heart attack on April 6 and was hospitalized at a Newark medical center, where he died.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy ordered a special primary on July 16 and a special election on September 18 to fill the remainder of the deceased politician’s term..
