Alec Baldwin’s lawyer says his client ‘didn’t commit any crime’ in murder trial

A defense attorney told jurors Wednesday that the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was a “terrible tragedy,” but that “Alec Baldwin He did not commit any crime; he was an actor, acting.”

Actor Alex Spiro’s lawyer emphasized in her opening statement in a Santa Fe, New Mexico, courtroom that Baldwin, who is facing trial for involuntary manslaughter, did exactly what actors always did on the set of the film “Rust,” where Hutchins was shot to death in October 2021.

“I don’t have to tell you more about this because you’ve all seen the gun fights in the movies,” Spiro noted.

Special prosecutor Erlinda Ocampo Johnson argued in her opening statement that Baldwin “violated cardinal rules of firearm safety” by skipping safety checks and recklessly handling a handgun in the moments before the shooting.
