Alexis Massol receives honorary doctorate from Amherst College for his activism from Casa Pueblo in Adjuntas

The engineer and co-founder of the organization Casa Pueblo, Alexis Massol Gonzalezreceived on Sunday an honorary doctorate from Amherst College, in Massachusetts, for his activism for more than four decades to benefit the protection of natural resources, community development and self-governance through grassroots and collective work.

“This is a recognition of all the management that Casa Pueblo has done, for the past 44 years, to break with the status quosaid the honoree during the graduation of that institution, where he was accompanied by his son, Axel Massol Deyafriends and other close friends.

Massol Gonzalez also considered that the recognition is a reward for the decolonial model that seeks to break dependence and servitude in order to achieve self-sustainability for the Puerto Rican people.

For his part, while informing Massol Gonzalez of his selection to receive the honorary degree, the president of the institution, Michael A Elliotthighlighted the trajectory of community struggle and environmental protection of the co-founder of Casa Pueblo, which in 2002 made him recipient of the prestigious Goldman Prize. This award is given each year to people whose efforts seek to defend nature and the environment.
