Ana Estrada dies, the first Peruvian to agree to euthanasia

LIMA — The Peruvian psychologist Ana Estradawho suffered from an incurable disease and was authorized in 2022 by the Supreme Court of Peru to receive euthanasia, died, her lawyer reported on Monday.

“On April 21, Ana Estrada exercised her fundamental right to a dignified death and agreed to the medical procedure of euthanasia”said his lawyer Josefina Miro Quesada in a statement. She added that Estrada, 47, “he died on his own terms, in accordance with his idea of ​​dignity and in full control of his autonomy.”

Miro Quesada added on his X account, formerly Twitter, that he would not make any further statements.

In 2022, for the first time in Peru’s history, the Supreme Court authorized Estrada’s euthanasia. The decision confirmed a first instance order that allowed, according to a protocol, a social security doctor to take her life whenever she wanted and that she would not be punished for it.
