The veteran singer Andy Montanezfriend and colleague of the deceased Hector Atabal, It was part of Atabal’s new single titled “Pa’ Ti Hector Atabal”, in commemoration of the group’s 40th anniversary and as a tribute to its founder.
The eternal “Nino de Trastalleres” is present in the single not only with his voice, but he also created a verse that serves as the backbone for the song that will be part of an EP that will be released in 2024.
“I feel honored to be part of this tribute to my brother Hector “Atabal” through his music and his legacy. “Hector, we love you and we will always love you.” the artist expressed in written statements.
Hector Rodriguez, who died in 2020, founded the group Atabal in 1983. Atabal means drum. Since its beginnings, the proposal emphasizes the sound of drums or atabals because these are a common element in Afro-Latin American popular music. This approach continues to be Atabal’s reason for being 40 years later.
The band has embarked on a musical path where the traditional took a more contemporary turn in the interpretation of the plena and bomb genres. When Atabal started in December 1982, Hector “Atabal’s” son, Caymmi, had not been born. Currently Caymmi leads the group.
Atabal has had the opportunity to represent Puerto Rico in festivals in Europe and the United States. The contemporary fusion that uses traditional music as a base has captivated around the world. And the group remains in constant evolution by applying current concepts that keep it current.
“Continuing my father’s legacy is a great responsibility that I do with great pride. From him I learned love for our roots and culture. He honors me to be part of the new generation that bets on our Puerto Rican music and, together with Maestro Andy Montanez, to perpetuate the name of one of his great bastions, my dad,” Caymmi explained.
