Arecibo communities demand that DRNA and EPA advance the closure of the landfill

He Citizen Movement for the Closure of the Arecibo Landfill reiterated this Wednesday that it disagrees with the closure date of the landfill system – established by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) for May 2027 – and demanded a closer date, taking into account multiple irregularities in the facility and its alleged impact on health and the environment.

“We disagre. I let the EPA know both (Federal Environmental Protection Agency) as well as Natural Resources. That date is not acceptable to the community; we have shown evidence of what we are going through day by day”, stressed Lilliam Diaz Montalvopresident of the organization.

After multiple complaints, the EPA’s Caribbean Environmental Protection Division granted the Movement a meeting, which took place this Wednesday at the federal agency’s headquarters in Guaynabo, a meeting that DRNA representatives also attended.

“How is it possible for a landfill to continue operating with so many daily non-compliances? The health of the residents is being affected and we cannot continue”claimed Diaz Montalvo.
