Arizona Congress approves repealing 1864 legislation that prohibits almost all abortions

phoenix The Congress of Arizona approved on Wednesday to repeal a ban on almost all abortions that had not been implemented for a long time, and has sent the bill to Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who is presumed to sign it into law.

Two Republicans joined Senate Democrats in voting 16-14 to strike down a Civil War-era ban on abortions that the state’s highest court recently allowed to go into effect. The repeal narrowly passed the Arizona House of Representatives last week.

Hobbs said in a statement that he hopes to quickly enact the repeal.

“The devastating consequences of this archaic ban are the reason I called for it to be repealed from the first day of my government,” he commented.

“Arizona women should not have to live in a state where politicians make decisions that should be between a woman and her doctor,” Hobbs said. “While this repeal is essential to protecting women’s lives, it is just the beginning of our fight to protect reproductive health in Arizona.”
