Arizona House approves measure to repeal an 1864 law that criminalizes almost all abortions

The House of Representatives of Arizona approved legislation Wednesday that is expected to repeal an 1864 state law that imposes a near-total ban on abortion In this state.

With the support of three Republican legislators, the Democrats of the Lower House, who are a minority, managed in their third attempt to overthrow the law restored after a decision by the Arizona Supreme Court on April 9.

With 32 votes in favor and 28 against, the project that overturns the measure from the time of the Civil war that made abortion a serious crime punishable by two to five years in prison for the woman who aborts or anyone who helps her.

The only exception contemplated allows abortion when the pregnant woman is in serious danger of losing her life.
