DHAKA, Bangladesh — At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured Monday after a freight train collided with a passenger train on the outskirts of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, a fire official said.
Rescuers joined local residents in extracting people from the twisted wagons, said Mosharraf Hossain of the Bhairab fire base in the central district of Kishoreganj, where the incident occurred.
He indicated that the remains of 15 people have been extracted and that the number of victims could rise.
“Our staff is working there. It’s a chaotic situation. We don’t have much information now.”he told The Associated Press by phone.
He explained that the incident occurred when the Godhuli Express train, which was heading to Dhaka, collided with a cargo train going to Chattogram.
Train service to other parts of the country was suspended following the accident, he added.
