At least 77 whales found stranded on Scottish beach

A group of At least 77 whales have been stranded on a beach on the island of Sanday, in the Orkney archipelago, in Scotlandin one of the largest phenomena of its kind in decades, according to the NGO British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).

Only 12 of the animals, from the genus of pilot whales, were still alive. after being discovered, the organization said in a statement.

At 10:45am on Thursday, the BDMLR received an alert of the appearance of around 100 cetaceans on Tresness beach in Sanday.

Despite their rapid mobilization towards this island, which is barely 50 square kilometers in size and has a population of half a thousand people, the veterinary services were unable to prevent the death of most of the animals, which had been stranded for several hours.

The live whales were given first aid while waiting for the tide to rise and allow them to return to the sea.
