Atalanta ends Bayer Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten record and establishes itself in the Europa League

Ademola Lookman was a devilish force and Bayer Leverkusen’s dream of completing an undefeated season was dashed.

To the tune of a treble, Atalanta defeated Leverkusen 3-0 on Wednesday in the final of the Europa League and ended the new German champion’s undefeated record of 51 matches.

Xabi Alonso’s team had a real review, one that no one predicted.

Lookman, the London-born Nigerian winger, was relentless in punishing blunders by the Leverkusen defense to score twice in the first 26 minutes, in which the favorites looked uncomfortable. He crowned his exhibition with a left-footed shot in the 75th to record the first hat trick in a final of the second most important club tournament in Europe.

Alonso will have to lift his squad’s spirits to compete in the German Cup final on Saturday. They will once again be heavy favorites to defeat second division side Kaiserslautern at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
