Autopsy reveals that minor who died in the United States after consuming spicy fried food had a heart defect

Boston A teenager from Massachusetts who participated in a spicy tortilla frying challenge on social media died from eating a large amount of chili extract and also had a congenital heart defectaccording to autopsy results obtained by The Associated Press.

Harris Wolobah, a 10th grade student from Worcester, died on Sept. 1, 2023, after eating tortilla chips made by Paqui, a subsidiary of Hershey Co. based in Texas.

Paqui removed the product from stores shortly after Harris’ death. The AP emailed Hershey on Thursday seeking comment.

A phone number for Harris’ family was disconnected. The Associated Press left messages seeking comment among family friends.

Harris died of cardiopulmonary arrest “in the context of recent ingestion of a food substance with a high concentration of capsaicin”, according to the autopsy from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Capsaicin is the component that gives chili peppers their heat.
