The Puerto Rican boxer Eliezer Brito He was defeated this Saturday by the Barbadian boxer Charles Cox, after the referee stopped the fight in the climax of the third round of a fight that was part of the men’s 80 kilogram (kg) division tournament of the Games. Pan American Games Santiago 2023.
Before the referee ended the fight, Cox was seen as the winner with four of the five judges, seeing him win two of the three rounds (20-18, 20-18, 20-18, 20-18, 18 -twenty).
Brito began the first round aggressively, attacking Cox’s body and face with combinations. However, during the course of the round, the Barbadian boxer began to get the better of him with good blows to the Puerto Rican’s face.
After losing the first, Brito began the second by calculating his moves more, but by then Cox had already gained confidence against the Puerto Rican fighter who, with the passing of each second, looked more exhausted.
With little gas in the tank, Brito got careless in the final moments of the second round and Cox took the opportunity to land a left hand that, according to the referee, required the first protection count of the fight. After that count, the majority of the judges considered that the Puerto Rican lost the round.
Despite having won the fight, Cox came out of his corner for the third round, extremely aggressive and went one-on-one with Brito. Halfway through the round, the Puerto Rican received his second protection count of the match, after the Barbadian hit him in the face with his right hand.
Seconds later, Cox put an end to the fight with a blow that resulted in the referee deciding that the Puerto Rican could not continue.
With the elimination of Brito, Angel Llanos is the only Puerto Rican boxer who remains hopeful of climbing the medal table in Santiago 2023.
Llanos is scheduled to get into the ring on Sunday against the American Omari Jones.
