Brazil: torrential downpours leave more than 20 dead in several cities

Torrential downpours have killed 23 people between the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo, Brazil, this weekend.

The Espirito Santo governorate said Sunday that 15 people have died and nearly 5,000 are homeless after torrential downpours since Friday night. Rio authorities reported eight deaths on Saturday.

Likewise, thirteen deaths in Espirito Santo were recorded in Mimoso do Sula city 74 kilometers (46 mi) south of Vitoria, the state capital.

Rescue crews in both states had to suspend their work on Friday night due to the risk of new landslides, and resumed their work on Saturday afternoon.

Additionally, several mayors and governors in Brazil’s southeastern region have been warning citizens about potential problems since Thursday. The warning issued for heavy rains in Espirito Santo is in effect until midnight.
