Brian Afanador and Melanie Diaz will go to one last turn for the Olympic pass in table tennis in Peru

The Puerto Rican tennis players Brian Afanador, Daniel Gonzalez, Melanie Diaz and Brianna Burgos will travel to Peru in the coming days to compete in the Americas qualifying tournament at Paris 2024 Olympic Gameswhich will be held from May 14 to 18.

It will be the last opportunity that the Puerto Rican rackets will have to punch out their Olympic ticket. Afanador and Melanie are the only ones who have experience in that type of scenario. The first debuted in Rio 2016 and returned in Tokyo 2020. For her part, Melanie competed in Tokyo.

In fact, the president of the Puerto Rican Table Tennis Federation (FPTM), Ivan Santos, understands that Afanador has the opportunity to go to his third Olympic tournament if a series of conditions are met, as happened on the past two occasions. Likewise, he could qualify with his teammates.

“When we qualified in 2016 and 2020 we went (with the mentality) that we can classify as we cannot classify. When Brian went the first time (to the qualifier) that he went to Chile, we understood that if that day he played well and effectively he would qualify… If he gets his mind right, he is in his peak (at its peak) and he has a good tournament, he has a chance to qualify (in Peru),” Santos explained.
