The Roberto Clemente Award is presented each year by the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball in honor “to the player who is the best representative of the sport of baseball, and an example of camaraderie, dedication to community works and contribution to the team”.

The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work began in 1971 with the creation of the “Commissioner’s Award.”

The recognition was renamed the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 as a tribute to the legendary outfielder of the Pittsburgh Pirates, after his death in a plane crash while carrying aid to Nicaragua, which had been affected by an earthquake.

Puerto Rican players such as Edgar Martinez (2004), Carlos Delgado (2006), Carlos Beltran (2013) and Yadier Molina (2018) were recipients of this award.
