Chiefs player suffers cardiac arrest during NFL champions’ practice

Kansas City – The reserve player of the Kansas City Chiefs, BJ Thompson was taken to a hospital in stable condition Thursday after the defensive lineman suffered a cardiac event. during a team meeting, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the event, said team coaches and medical staff were able to react quickly and treat Thompson until paramedics arrived.

The Chiefs planned to conclude their voluntary offseason workouts on Thursday, but a team spokesman said practice would be delayed until Friday. That’s when Chiefs coach Andy Reid and other players will speak to reporters.

Thompson, 27, was a fifth-round pick by the Chiefs out of Stephen F. Austin in last year’s draft.

The only game in which Thompson appeared was the regular season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, when Kansas City had already clinched its playoff berth and the outcome of the game was meaningless. Thompson had two tackles in that game.
