Church bells ring in Spain thanks to efforts to recover a lost “language”

Xavier Pallàs plants his feet on the floor of the bell tower, grabs the rope and with one pull fills the lush Spanish valley with the reverberating ringing of a church bell.

Clang-clong! Clang-clong! Clang-CLONG! The swinging bronze bell resounds with each stroke of the clapper, filling the little stone tower with a rolling hum. Once Pallàs finishes his chimes, the metallic melody fades away into calm. Silence returns to the tower and the valley’s soundscape returns to the songs of birds and the cock-a-doodle-doo of roosters.

For most, church bells are just a quaint, automated background noise. But Pallàs and his 18 students at the Vall de Bas Bellring School are trying to change that by reviving the fading art of ringing — and communicating — by hand.
