Company in Juncos and its president plead guilty to smuggling porcelain slabs

A company based in Juncos and its president pleaded guilty in the federal court smuggling and executing a fraudulent scheme to avoid paying $1.09 million in taxes on merchandise imported from Chinareported the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico through written statements.

The document delivered by a grand jury maintains that, between 2021 and 2022, the company Akua Mosaics and its president, Kenneth Flemingconspired to defraud the US government to avoid having to pay taxes on products manufactured and imported from China. Specifically, the document highlights that Akua Mosaics imported mosaic porcelain slabs through a Chinese citizen, identified as Shuyi Mo, from Malaysia.

The administration of the former president donald trump promoted and implemented, in 2019, a new round of tariffs on products manufactured and imported from China to the United States. This measure made more than two-thirds of the products imported from China to US soil more expensive.
