Department of Health declares a dengue epidemic in Puerto Rico

The secretary of Health, Carlos Melladodeclared this Monday an epidemic of dengue in Puerto Rico, after, for the eighth consecutive week, the agency’s surveillance system reported a number of cases above the epidemiological threshold.

Mellado also signed a public health emergency declaration due to the increase in cases.

“I have signed an order that allows us to access more funds to strengthen all dengue surveillance systems,” said the Secretary of Health.

“We have identified cases for the month of March in 25 municipalities,” he added, for his part. Melissa Marzanthe agency’s chief epidemiology officer.

Dengue is an acute viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti. In Puerto Rico, it is endemic – that is, it is present all year round – and is common in more than 100 countries in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
