Dog sniffs something unusual in traveler’s luggage returning from Africa

Boston — A dog from Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sniffed something unusual in the luggage of a traveler returning from Africa.

The passenger returning from a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo reported that the luggage contained dried fish, but an inspection at Boston’s Logan Airport revealed four dead and dehydrated monkeys, according to agents. The traveler said that he had introduced the monkeys into USA for their own consumption, CPB spokesman Ryan Bissette explained on Sunday.

Raw or minimally processed meat from wild animals, sometimes called “bush meat,” is banned in the United States due to the threat of disease.

“The potential dangers of bringing wild meat into the United States are real. Bush meat can carry germs that can cause illness, including the virus. eboladeclared Julio Caravia, local port director of the Office of Customs and Border Protection.
