Miami – The Puerto Rican pitcher Edwin “Sugar” Diaz is willing to change his role to benefit the New York Metseven if he has to lose his closer status.

In the midst of a dismal start to the season in which he has blown two consecutive save opportunities, the star reliever with a $102 million contract indicated that he would be willing to accept another assignment if the team believes that is best.

“I’m willing to do anything,” Diaz said Saturday after blowing a four-run lead in the ninth inning against the Miami Marlinsone of the worst offensive teams in the Major Leagues.

Diaz has a 10.80 ERA in his last eight appearances, allowing four home runs in 8 1/3 innings.

“I want to help my team win,” said the Puerto Rican right-hander.
