Federal lower house approves bill to send weapons to Israel

Washington— The United States House of Representatives approved a bill Thursday requiring the transfer of weapons to Israel at a time when Republicans are working to highlight divisions within the Democratic Party over the war between Israel and Hamas.

The administration of President Joe Biden, in an attempt to discourage Israel from its offensive in the densely populated city of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, this month paused a shipment of 3,500 bombs — some as large as 2,000 pounds that are capable of killing hundreds of people in populated areas. Biden’s decision sparked outrage from Republicans, who accused him of abandoning the United States’ closest ally in the Middle East.

The debate over the bill, which was urgently brought to the House floor by the Republican Party leadership this week, revealed Washington’s deep fracture in its vision of the war in Gaza. The White House and Democratic leaders have struggled to rally support among a House group that ranges from moderates, frustrated that the president is allowing any kind of rift between the United States and Israel, to progressives, outraged by the fact that it continues to send weapons.
