Federal Prosecutor’s Office recommends 15 years in prison for Maria Milagros “Tata” Charbonier

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office recommended a 15-year prison sentence for former representative Maria Milagros “Tata” Charbonier after being found guilty of a bribery and kickback scheme.

The Public Ministry presented its recommendation in a motion this Tuesday, when it also stated that her husband, Orlando Montesbe imprisoned for five years and three months.

“Defendant Maria Milagros Charbonier Laureano masterminded a multi-year, multi-defendant scheme to steal more than $100,000 in public funds from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. “In the course of the plan, Charbonier violated her oath to the people of Puerto Rico, corrupted several public officials, and recruited members of her own family, including her young son, to carry out her orders,” indicates the motion of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

He added that “as federal investigators closed in, Charbonier repeatedly lied to agents about his crimes, fabricated evidence, destroyed text messages and used Frances Acevedo Ceballos (whom Charbonier once said was “like my daughter”) as a shield. to isolate oneself from exposure.”

“Charbonier continued to demand bribes and steal from taxpayers during devastating hurricanes and a global pandemic,” he noted. “Simply put, his corruption knew no bounds.”

“His criminal conduct warrants a Guideline sentence of 15 years in prison, consistent with the Guideline’s correct calculations in the Presentencia Investigation Report,” he said.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for this Friday, in the Federal Court in Hato Rey.
