Fire at Rouen Cathedral spire in France under control

A fire broke out Thursday in the spire of the medieval cathedral in the Norman city of Rouen, French authorities said, announcing the blaze was under control about 90 minutes later.

Witnesses speaking to BFM television described smoke billowing from the spire and recalled a devastating 2019 fire at Paris’s Notre Dame cathedral that toppled its spire and destroyed its roof.

The imposing Gothic cathedral in Rouen, Normandy, is best known for a series of paintings by the Impressionist Claude Monet.

“A fire is starting in the spire of Rouen Cathedral”wrote the city’s mayor, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, on the social network X.

Stephane Gouezec, of the fire brigade of France’s Seine-Maritime department, later said the source of the fire had been located – in a spire that was being renovated – and that crews were on site making sure there were no “hot spots”. However, he told reporters that There was little risk of the fire spreading because it was in a mostly metal area..
