Florida prohibits homeless people from sleeping on streets and public squares

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantissigned a bill this Wednesday that prohibits homeless people from sleeping on the streets, and orders cities and local governments to establish shelters in remote areas.

The norm seeks to help communities “affected” by the problem of homeless camps who Starting October 1, they will not be able to sleep on streets, parks and other public spaces.

Counties and cities are also prohibited from allowing homeless people to camp and sleep in public places. Those municipalities that violate it may be reported by people, businesses or even by the state prosecutor’s office from the January 1, 2025.

The legislation HB-1365 seeks to require local governments to ensure that homeless people receive “the mental health and drug addiction services they need while residing in a designated location,” away from the streets to ensure “public safety,” according to a statement from the governor’s office.
