Former American first lady Rosalynn Carter dies at 96

The former first lady of the United States and wife of former President Jimmy Carter, Rosalynn Carterdied on Sunday, at the age of 96, at his home in the state of Georgia.

According to a publication by The Carter Centerthe organization founded by the couple, the former first lady “died peacefully, with her family at her side.”

The statement also details that Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter were married for 77 years. In addition to being the 39th president of the United States, Carter, now 99, was also the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I accomplished.”said former President Carter, according to the publication. “He gave me wise advice and encouragement when I needed it. “As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew that someone loved me and supported me,” he added.

In addition to her husband, Carter is survived by her children, Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One of her grandchildren died in 2015.

“In addition to being a loving mother and an extraordinary First Lady, my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right,” Chip Carter said, according to the statement. “His life of service and compassion set an example for all Americans. She will be greatly missed, not only by our family, but also by the many people who today have better mental health services and access to resources to care for the sick.”
