Former French first lady accused of witness tampering in case against her husband

The former French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy She was charged Tuesday with preliminary charges for her involvement in alleged attempts to pressure a witness who accused the former president Nicolas Sarkozy of receiving illegal funding from Libya for his campaign.

Bruni-Sarkozy was placed under judicial supervision on Tuesday, which includes banning her from contact with anyone involved in the case except her husband, according to a judicial official who was not authorized to be named publicly when discussing an ongoing investigation.

Preliminary charges against Bruni-Sarkozy include witness tampering and criminal association with attempted fraud to mislead magistrates investigating her husband on suspicion of receiving illegal funds during the 2007 presidential campaign.the official said.

Bruni-Sarkozy’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment. After being questioned by police in May, Bruni-Sarkozy’s lawyers said she provided “useful clarifications and explanations” but declined to comment further.
