Four student-athletes from Canovanas schools are recognized with the Ramon Ramos Manso award

Four student athletes from the Luis Hernaiz Veronne High School and the William Rivera Betancourt Vocational School, both in Canovanas, received the award this year Ramon Ramos Mansoan award in honor of the former player of the National Basketball Team.

Sailys Caraballo Diaz and Luisezeguiel Benitez Medero, from the William Rivera Vocational School in the San Isidro de Canovanas neighborhood; and Daxelys Diaz Herrera and Joel Encarnacion from the Luis Hernaiz Veronne Urban High School were the student-athletes honored this year.

The prize, established by the statistician Francisco “Paquito” Rodriguez, It is delivered annually at the graduations of said schools in the northeastern municipality since 1992.

Rodriguez was the first leader and mentor of Ramos, a native of Canovanas.

A traffic accident in 1989 deprived Ramos of playing in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Ramos was a student-athlete at Seton Hall University with a 3.90 GPA. He led the Seton Hall Pirates to the NCAA Final Four in the 1989 season.
