Santiago, Chile – The Puerto Rican taekwondo player Crystal Weekes lost the bronze medal in the 67 kilograms of the Panamerican Games upon being defeated on Monday by the Mexican Victoria Chavez for 2-1.
Weekes, who was in fourth position along with Ecuadorian Dayana Folleco, won the first round 6-0.
For the second, she started down 3-0 with a three-point kick to the face that the Mexican won in a video appeal, plus a one-point penalty. However, she closed the score to get one point closer (5-4), but Heredia won 7-6.
In the two-minute tiebreaker round, Weekes tied it at 3 points after being down 3-0. The Mexican achieved two points in the final 10 seconds to obtain the bronze medal.
The poomsae modality of taekwondo has produced three of the four bronze medals that Puerto Rico has achieved in Chile. The other medal was won by skater Steven Pineiro in park.
