France imposes emergency in New Caledonia after riots

France imposed a state of emergency New Caledoniaa French territory in the Pacific, for 12 days, increasing the powers of security forces to quell unrest in the archipelago where indigenous peoples seek independence.

Violence broke out on Monday after protests against electoral reforms They left four dead, including a French police officer, and more than 300 injured.according to authorities in that country.

French forces were deployed to protect ports and airports, allow other agencies to suppress looting, fires and other disordersannounced the French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal. The state of emergency takes effect from 8 pm Paris time, which is 5 am New Caledonia time.

“Nothing justifies violence,” Attal said. “Our highest priority for the next few hours is to restore order and calm”.

The emergency measures give authorities powers to address violence, including the possibility of giving house arrest to people considered a threat to public order. They also allow them to carry out raids, confiscate weapons, restrict movement and impose jail time for offenders.
