France votes in elections that could give historic victory to the far right

Paris – Polls opened in France on Sunday in a second round of voting that could either deliver a historic victory to Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally and its nationalist, anti-immigrant views, or produce a divided parliament and years of political gridlock.

French President Emmanuel Macron took a risky gamble by dissolving parliament and calling elections after his centrist group suffered a heavy defeat in the European elections on June 9.

Early elections in the nuclear-armed country will affect the war in Ukraine, global diplomacy and European economic stability, and will almost certainly undermine Macron’s standing for the remaining three years of his term.

The first round of the election, held on 30 June, was the best result ever for the National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen.
