The stellar pitcher Freddie Cabrera covered the entire route to give defending champions Toritos de Cayey a 4-0 victory over Arenosos de Camuythis Friday, at the opening of the 2023 final series of the Double A Superior Baseball League.
It is the fourth win in a row for Cayey, who is in search of his fifth national title and the first ‘back to back’ in franchise history.
For the Sandys it was their first game in a national final in the franchise’s 66-year history.
Cabrera looked comfortable with six strikeouts and just five hits allowed and one walk in nine innings to win his third game in four outings since the semifinal round.
Cayey took the lead from the second inning with a pair of runs, the product of a selection play with a hit by Kelvin Perez and a single by Nelson Molina. Both were undeserved against the Arenas veteran starter, Fernando Cabrera, who took the setback.
In the third inning, a single by Bryan Colon drove in the third run and the fourth came in the fifth inning with a wild pitch from Cabrera, which Kevin Luciano took advantage of to score from third base.
Cabrera covered seven innings and gave up seven hits and four runs, two of them undeserved.
In the seventh episode, history was made, when a play review was applied for the first time in the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation. Umpire Edwin Hernandez ruled out at first to invalidate a home run by Emanuel Colon, who did not touch base. The leader of the Toritos, Juan ‘Igor’ Gonzalez, requested the review and Hernandez’s decision was confirmed.
The series continues today, Saturday at 8:00 pm with the second match, at the Juan ‘Cheo’ Lopez Stadium in Camuy. Left-hander Gregorio Reyes will start for the Arenosos and right-hander Jesus Ortiz for the Toritos.
