Gainax, the legendary studio of the anime “Evangelion”, declares bankruptcy

Tokyo – The Japanese animation studio Gainaxresponsible for the original production of the popular 90’s seriesNeon Genesis Evangelion‘, among other works such as ‘Fushigi no Umi no Nadia’, ‘FLCL’ or ‘Kare Kano’has declared bankruptcy.

The firm, established in 1984 under the name Daicon Filmcounts among its founders the well-known director Hideaki Annowho directed the influential series and numerous franchise projects even after leaving the company in 2007, a year after founding the Khara studio, after which he remained a shareholder in Gainax.

The trademarks and copyrights of the company’s works have been transferred precisely to Khara.

“It is unfortunate that an animation studio with almost 40 years of history comes to an end in this way,” Khara said in a statement Friday following the bankruptcy announcement.
