Garry Conille, UN specialist, arrives in Haiti to take office as prime minister

A development specialist United Nations Organization in charge of restoring order in Haiti arrived in the Caribbean country on Saturday to assume his new position as prime minister.

A transition council that aims to pave the way for holding elections in Haiti this week named Garry Conille. Replaces interim prime minister Michel Patrick Boisvertwith whom he met upon his arrival in the capital on Saturday, Prince Portaccording to a government statement.

Conille is UNICEF regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023 and was previously Prime Minister of Haiti between October 2011 and May 2012, under the mandate of then-President Michel Martelly.

Gang violence continues to rise in some parts of Haiti’s capital and surrounding areas as Conille takes the reins of the troubled country pending the deployment of a UN-backed police force from Kenya and other countries.

Haiti shares the island of The Spanish with the Dominican Republic.
