Government Ethics files a complaint against the rector of the UPR in Carolina

The Office of Government Ethics (OEG) filed a complaint against the rector of the Carolina enclosure of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Jose Meza Pereira, for increasing the salary of trusted employees against the regulations of the academic institution.

The events date back to July 2021, when the rector granted salary increases of about $150 per month to three employees, who were in charge of the Physical Resources, Finance, and Human Resources offices.

The increases were not authorized by the then president of the UPR, who in 2019 had issued a guideline that established that “salary changes for trusted appointments already in force must have prior authorization from the president.”

A spokeswoman for the Carolina campus indicated that they will not comment while the administrative process is ongoing.

According to the complaint, in 2022, the then interim president of the UPR notified Meza Pereira about non-compliance with university regulations.
