Haiti’s former capital seeks to revive its splendor as violence consumes Port-au-Prince

Cap-Haitien, Haiti — They call him Okap, home of kings, emancipated slaves and Haitian revolutionaries.

Located on the bright north coast, The city of Cap Haitien was abandoned as the capital during the last years of the French colonial era and, once again, when the Kingdom of Haiti fell after the monarch’s suicide and the murder of his teenage son.

In its day it was known as the Paris of the Antillesand now it is about to become what some say it is the country’s de facto capital as Port-au-Prince descends into chaos due to the violence of armed gangs.

History repeats itself”Yvrose Pierre, the mayor of Cap-Haïtien, told The Associated Press on a recent afternoon.
