Heat indices remain high due to dense cloud cover over the island

Another hot day is expected for Puerto Rico this Sunday, with heat indices rising between 108 and 111 degrees Fahrenheit in coastal towns in the north and west of the island.

According to the meteorologist Lee Ann Ingles Serrano, From the National Meteorological Service (SNM), these conditions could begin to be felt from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

“The peak of the heat is probably between 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, where the sun is expected to be most visible”Ingles explained, adding that during the morning dense cloudiness is expected around the island.

However, the meteorologist stressed that, although clouds are present over the area, there is no significant rain activity for Sunday.

“We are going to see a little bit of shower activity in the southern interior of Puerto Rico and that is for the afternoon hours… it is expected that it will prevail like this almost all day, even at night… The cloudiness allowed us to have a warm morning because “It trapped the energies,” detailed Ingles.

These hot conditions could last, the expert said, until Tuesday as long as the flow of wind from the south continues.

Although it is possible that the cloudiness will clear during the day, the meteorologist warned that a band of rain could also arrive that affected the Dominican Republic.

This band, combined with a past cold front in the region, could cause downpours on the island starting Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. As this rain activity begins, the direction of the island’s winds is also expected to fluctuate. The change is expected to give way to a flow of northerly winds, which would consequently improve hot conditions.

“Marine conditions remain dangerous across the north, northwest and northeast coast of the island, as well as for the island municipality of Culebra, where a strong rip warning is in effect until 6:00 pm and a high risk of Ocean currents”he reported.

Also, a warning for small boat operators will be in effect overnight for waves of six to eight feet in exposed waters and five to seven feet in coastal waters.

“It is not a good day to be visiting beaches, especially for the north of Puerto Rico”English exhorted.
