His last dance in the clay? Rafael Nadal falls in the first round of the French Open

ParisRafael Nadal he said goodbye at the first change in the French Open by succumbing 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to Alexander Zverev on Monday, in what could have been the 14-time Roland Garros champion’s last match in his favorite tournament.

The Spanish star has indicated that 2024 could be his last season before retiring, but on Saturday he said he was not 100% sure he would not play at the French Open again. And he reiterated it after his defeat on Monday, only his fourth in 116 matches in the Grand Slam on clay.

When it ended, in a disappointing way, with Nadal who was not at his usual level after a year and a half ordeal with a hip injury and an abdominal tear, the 22-time Slam champion thanked the public on the Philippe Chatrier court for “the incredible energy” they gave him during three hours and five minutes of play.
