House of Representatives approves resolution for the Minillas tunnel to be named after former governor Carlos Romero Barcelo

Among the 45 measures approved this Sunday – out loud – the House of Representativesthere is a legislative resolution for the Minillas tunnel, in San Juan, to be named after the former governor of New Progressive Party (PNP) Carlos Romero Barcelodied on May 2, 2021.

House Joint Resolution 284 was attended to by discharge, meaning that no report was received from a committee to recommend or reject its approval.

“(The) career in public service of this illustrious Puerto Rican positions him as one of the most transcendental figures in Puerto Rican politics of the second half of the 20th century. His great deeds, the fierce defense of his postulates and his vast contributions to the political and governmental work of Puerto Rico remain as a legacy for future generations,” reads the measure, authored by the presenter. Romero Barcelo was the first mayor of San Juan elected by direct vote (1968-1977) and the fifth elected governor of Puerto Rico, a position he held between 1977 and 1985. It was, precisely, during his first term that the Minillas tunnel was built. , infrastructure on which the Luis A. Ferre Fine Arts Center is located, being inaugurated by Barcelo on April 9, 1981, the measure stands out.
