Hurricane Beryl reaches the Texas coast after regaining strength

Hurricane Beryl made landfall early Monday in southern Texas with a dangerous storm surge and strong winds. The powerful storm, which has already left a trail of death in its wake across Mexico and the Caribbean, reached land around 4:00 a.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

“Strong winds, heavy rainfall and life-threatening storm surge are occurring in areas across Texas”the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said before the storm made landfall.

The storm was centered about 15 miles southeast of Matagorda, Texas, and about 100 miles northeast of Corpus Christi. Matagorda is located about 100 miles south of Houston.

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds were 80 miles per hour (mph) as it moved northwest at 10 mph. A hurricane warning has been issued for the Texas coast from Mesquite Bay northward to Port Bolivar, the NHC said.
