Hurricane Beryl will pass over or near the southern coast of Jamaica

Hurricane conditions are beginning to be felt Wednesday afternoon in Jamaica as Tropical Cyclone Beryl begins to enter the region.

The phenomenon is expected pass over or brush the southern coast of the island in the next few hours as it continues its west-northwestward path, before turning westward toward the Cayman Islands.

According to a bulletin issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), at 5:00 p.m. the eye of Beryl was located at latitude 17.5 North, longitude 77.6 West while moving at a speed of 20 miles per hour (mph), a lower acceleration than that reported at 2:00 p.m.

The system’s maximum sustained winds have decreased slightly since the morning, reaching 140 mph in the latest NHC update. However, the atmospheric phenomenon maintained its classification as a Category 4 hurricane.
