“I never bet on baseball or any other sport”: Shohei Ohtani defends himself after the illegal betting scandal involving his former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani said Monday that he has never bet on any sport and that his interpreter Ippei Mizuhara stole money from him and lied to him.

Ohtani held a press conference at Dodger Stadium, five days after Mizuhara was fired by the Dodgers following reports of Los Angeles Times and ESPN about his alleged links to an illegal betting house.

“I am very sad and surprised that someone I trusted did this.”said the Japanese star as he sat next to Will Ireton, the team’s performance operations manager, who translated.

Ohtani spoke for nearly 12 minutes, referring to a document in front of him. He did not accept questions.

“Ippei has been stealing money from my account and lying,” said Ohtani, who learned of Mizuhara’s illegal betting in Korea, where the Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres last week.
