Irish heritage celebrated in the United States with St. Patrick’s Day parades

People across the United States celebrated Irish heritage Saturday in several major parades in the Saint Patrick’s daycommemorating the holiday a day early at events that included a grand anniversary in Savannah, Georgia, and honored a pioneering female business leader as grand marshal in New York.

The holiday commemorates the patron saint of Ireland and was largely popularized by Irish Catholic immigrants. Although St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, some parades were brought forward to Sunday, a day of worship for Catholics.
